FDA-recognized conditions for HBOT (U.S.)

These are the on-label, clinically established indications used by U.S. hospital hyperbaric programs (based largely on the UHMS list that insurers follow):

  • Air or gas embolism.

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning, including CO + cyanide poisoning.

  • Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene).

  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias.

  • Decompression sickness.

  • Arterial insufficiencies (e.g., central retinal artery occlusion; selected problem wounds due to poor arterial flow).

  • Severe anemia (exceptional blood-loss anemia) when transfusion is not possible/available.

  • Intracranial abscess.

  • Necrotizing soft-tissue infections.

  • Refractory osteomyelitis.

  • Delayed radiation injury (soft-tissue and bony radionecrosis, including radiation cystitis/proctitis).

  • Compromised grafts and flaps.

  • Acute thermal burn injury.

  • Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL).

Off-Label Conditions Treated with HBOT (U.S.)

Off-label neurological and psychological conditions

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome: HBOT is promoted to aid recovery by increasing oxygen delivery to the brain and reducing inflammation. Some small studies have shown improved cognitive function.

  • Stroke: Some providers use HBOT for stroke rehabilitation, with limited evidence suggesting it might enhance brain function and circulation.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Anecdotal reports and preliminary studies suggest HBOT may help manage symptoms by affecting brain function and mood regulation.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Some centers offer HBOT for ASD, hypothesizing that increased oxygen could reduce inflammation and improve brain function.

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): HBOT has been investigated as a treatment for MS.

  • Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia

  • Cerebral Palsy

Off-label chronic and systemic conditions

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): HBOT is used to address the fatigue symptoms of CFS by potentially improving energy production and reducing inflammation.

  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain: HBOT may be used to manage pain by reducing inflammation and altering pain perception, particularly for complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

  • Lyme Disease: Some alternative medicine centers use HBOT for chronic Lyme disease, though it is not an FDA-approved use.

  • Long COVID-19: As an emerging use, HBOT is being studied for its potential to alleviate symptoms like fatigue and cognitive issues. Early results are promising, but it remains an experimental treatment.

  • Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are sometimes treated with HBOT.

Off-label cosmetic and wellness treatments

  • Anti-Aging and Wellness: Many wellness spas promote HBOT for anti-aging, claiming it can reduce wrinkles and improve skin health. While some studies explore this.

  • Athletic Performance and Recovery: Athletes sometimes use HBOT to speed up injury recovery and reduce soreness, believing increased oxygen aids muscle repair.

  • Post-Surgical Healing: HBOT is used for plastic surgery and general surgery recovery.

HBOT is Effective and Increasing in Popularity
